Enduit de Montmorency for Interior

Enduit and Mortier de Montmorency also known as "Plâtre - chaux Vieujot" or "Coating of Montmorency" is a gypsum and lime-plaster traditionally manufactured near Paris for decorative plastering of masonry walls.

"L’Enduit de Montmorency" is a gypsum and lime-plaster coating product, traditionally made with gypsum-plaster and fat lime, without sand.
"Le Mortier of Montmorency" is a mortar that also contains sand. The sand granulometry, color and quantity are chosen according to the desired results and texture.

"L’Enduit de Montmorency" is designed to plaster on any kind of masonry and traditional walls in interior.
These walls can be either homogeneous or composite (cement blocks, light concrete, bricks, wood frame, nogged rag-stone with sablon mortar or lime, plaster debris, gypsum stone…), old as new ones.
Specifically,"Enduit de Montmorency" is the ideal solution on porous structure walls (bricks, blocks, light blocks, hempcrete, straw bales, compressed earth blocks, etc ...).
It's highly breathable and durable. It carries on the francilian tradition of renovation plaster coating.
Moreover,it constitutes the base for "stuc pierre" and "stuc brique". Ask us for more details.

It is also used for exterior works. See our sheet "L’Enduit de Montmorency for exterior".

"L’Enduit de Montmorency" has an exceptional ability to dry and sanitize walls, and participate to moisture regulation, because of its unequaled breathing abilities.
Therefore, it is particularly recommended for porous structure walls (cut stone, masonry coated with plaster, limestone or sablon mortar, wood frame, straw bales, hempcrete, hemp blocks, light concrete blocks, ...).
Mass-tinted, it's specially suitable for heavy-duty areas.
The absence of shrinkage during the drying phase makes it easy and safe to use, even fdor important thicknesses.
These "plaster and lime" coatings or mortars are responding very well to the always possible movements in structures.
After setting, "l’Enduit de Montmorency" recarbonates to the air and forms a hardened calcite surface. Moreover, it's specifically recommanded when a lime wash finish.
The gypsum it contains offers a excelllent protection against fire to organic walls (timber frame, straw bale, hemp-based solutions, …).

Aspect and range

Lime-plasters have the bygone skin qualities, light color and smoothness of the traditional coatings of Paris-France.
"L’Enduit de Montmorency" (without sand) enables very smooth cut finishes, which are traditional in the Ile de France region. This type of finish is very resistant and don’t get easily stained.
"Le Mortier de Montmorency" (with sand) enables to realize scraped finishes : our large variety of sand granulometries and colors enables keeping up with the regional features.
"Le Stuc Pierre de Montmorency" is the suitable version for our Stuc Pierre process.
Enduits, Mortiers and Stucs de Montmorency are delivered premixed, with the exact selected color match.

Old masonry that needs to be coated must be protected from unwanted water infiltration (water sipping, backsplash and rising by capillary action).
Particularly, exterior renders, foot details, damp water management works, etc .. must play their role.
As natural material, the decision to use it must take into account the always possible variations of the material, escpecially in terms of color and texture.

Preparatory conditions

In all cases, it is indispensable to plaster on a prepared support - clean, soot, bistre or efflorescence free - , all support pathologies treated, all support non-adhering elements suppressed, etc .... Then to thoroughly dust off.
The support must present a sufficient "scratch" surface for adhesion. For restoration of old walls, the very deeply scarified parts must be wire-meshed and re-filled with identical material to the original.
All non-apparent wood and/or frame elements must be wire-meshed before coating, as well as all surface heterogeneities ( wire-lath and galvanized nails).

Working with gypsum and lime-plaster is a matter of following the rules of the art and our technical specifications.
For special cases or for additional information, please contact us.

Because there is lime in the mix, it is imperative to wear gloves and protective glasses.

"L’Enduit de Montmorency" should not be applied in very cold temperatures (not below 5 °C / 41 °F), or on a frozen or thawing support.
In hot weather, the coating needs to be protected from direct sun exposure while work is in progress and during the first days of drying (7 days). Do not apply the coating on very hot days or under direct sun.
It is hand-mixed with the help of a mixer in a rubber container, or can be sprayed with a machine.
It must form an homogeneous paste holding a load at least 1 ¼ in. thick (10/13 l./bag).
If necessary for rough work, use PG 30 manual, PG 100 for spraying, or "Enduit de Montmorency".
Preferably the application should be done in one coat: otherwise apply successive layers from 12 to 35 mm, each one with cut finish.
Then, "Enduit de Montmorency" is coated. This top layer must be 12 mm thick minimum. A straight edge can be used for this purpose.
One has about 2 hours to spread and float the product.
The setting occurs in the 2 to 3 following hours. The finishing usually begins in the afternoon when a peel comes off the sharpened tool :
coupé (with berthelet)
gratté (with a nail-board)
décapé or ligné (with metal brush) lissé ( with a stainless steel tool, not for exterior though).
etc ...
